CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Sam Winchester
Canon: Supernatural
Canon Point: Season 15 episode 19
Appearance: Jared Padalecki
Age: 37
Character snapshot: Sam Winchester is an evolutionary character. Sam is at Stanford, studying to be a lawyer, living with a girl, as far away from the "family business" as you could get. As Sam took to hunting, he was motivated by revenge and perhaps more motivated to rid the world of evil than his brother, Dean. He often took unnecessary risks and often hid things from Dean. As he got older, his motivation for everything he did was love, love for his brother, love for the world. He felt a deep need to protect those he cared about. Sam is so smart and he uses his intelligence to make sure that his people are safe. He has grown a lot from the 'boy with demon blood' to a 'Men of Letters' and respected hunter. Sam is far more emotionally fragile than Dean and he is a more 'wears his heart on his sleeve' type of guy. Sam has always been a quiet guy and is slow to anger but he's not fun to be around when he's pissed.
World description: The World of Supernatural is much like today's world, except Monsters exist. Vampires, Werewolves, Witches, all the Urban legends you can conjure up in your mind are real. The Winchesters deal with Dijinn and various other Monsters. Their world even goes so far as to deal with the concept of heaven and hell, angels and demons. Angels were real and working with or against God. God was a nonfiction writing, documenting and controlling every aspect of their lives but when they first "met" God, they were at a fan convention going by the name Chuck. His world embraces the 'Meta' both of their fans and the monsters they deal with. Sam and Dean have been forced to watch the story of their lives play out on stage, right in front of them.
History: Sam Winchester was born May 2, 1983, and had a far from Idyllic childhood. He was a baby when his big brother, Dean was tasked with carrying him out of the house on fire before it consumed them. Sam's mother was killed in the house fire by a demon named Azeal. He didn’t remember his mother at all and he had an absentee father because John was too busy trying to kill the demon that broke apart his family. From Sam’s perspective, John was sacrificing the family he had to chase a ghost. Dean tried to shield Sam from the worst of John Winchester’s behavior becoming a father figure for Sam. Sam challenged everything about the hunter’s lifestyle, even going as far as to leave his family and go to Stanford. Dean shows up after 2 years saying that their father never came back from a hunting trip. Sam follows his brother because there is nothing that he wouldn’t do for him. Unfortunately, Sam getting back into the family business triggered the Demon that killed their mother to go after Sam’s girlfriend, killing her in the same manner their mother died. Sam gets back into hunting and is consumed with vengeance at any cost. They learn that Sam is a special child and has demon blood running through his veins. The years leading up to finding the demon that killed their mother were fraught with bad decisions on both Sam's and Dean’s part, but mostly Sam’s. Sam went from hunting demons using the demon’s blood to falling into hell because he had to save his brother and thought that the only way to do that was to take a trip to hell with Lucifer since he was his true vessel. Sam spent a long time in hell and came back without a soul. Sam has had his faith tested many times, wanting to believe in God but realizing that God is a manipulative man who is controlling his life, forcing him to live out a story predetermined for him. Sam becomes a member of Team Free Will 2.0, along with his brother, an Angel named Castiel, who became one of his closest friends, and Jack, a Nephilim, son of Lucifer that they all pseudo adopted. They eventually beat God, but only after losing Cas and everyone they ever loved. Sam is finally free to live his life on his own terms, after saying goodbye to Jack, who becomes the new God.
What are your character’s mental/emotional strengths?
Mental Strength: Just by looking at Sam, someone would not think that he was as mentally strong. Dean has always acted like a protector of Sam, almost like a job, and Sam let him in part because it was just easier and Sam understood that Dean needed to feel needed. Sam did show his mental strength when he fought and beat Lucifer and saved his brother. It put the boys on more of an even playing field for the first time. Sam and Dean both have been through a lot over the years, but Sam's trials seem to take a more emotional toll on him. He wants so badly for Dean to think he's strong and infallible that he often takes on more than he should.
Sensitivity/Caring: Sam's sensitivity and caring is one of his greatest strengths. He is a relatable person and he immediately makes people feel comfortable in his presence. He is able to get information and put people at ease by just being nice to them. Sam wants to believe the best in people and is more apt to trust than his brother. It might be considered a weakness by some, but Sam views it as a strength. He likes being able to relate to people on an emotional level.
Intelligence: Sam has a big brain, meaning he is super smart. Dean gives him crap all the time about going to college but on some level, Dean is proud of his baby brother. Sam uses his brain to save the day throughout his life, saving Dean's bacon. He leads Dean through an old burned church, which was hallowed ground-based on something he read in order to get rid of the ghost. Sam is often the one that researches the lore and spells that are used on their hunts. Sam did complete 2 full years of college and he was studying to be a lawyer. He loves to read anything, online or in print. He feels most at home when he is explaining something to his brother or anyone who might be willing to listen.
What are your character’s mental/emotional weaknesses?
Love: Love is supposed to be kind, right? It is supposed to be merciful but in the curious case of Sam Winchester, love is one of his weaknesses. Sam is the type of man who shows a great emotional capacity to love. He is accepting of literally anyone and can differentiate between a meat suit and a demon. Sam's capacity to love and his ability to just accept things at face value weakens Sam to a certain degree. He is more likely to get burned and suffer the emotional fallout for a long time. Back in his early days as a hunter, Sam took the side of a demon over Dean and ended up releasing Lucifer into the world. Sam also took Lucifer's vessel in, later on, wanting to protect him because Nick was more than the demon Lucifer but he got burned when Nick murdered someone for revenge.
guilt Sam takes the weight of the world onto his shoulders. He believes that because he is smart and has faith, he should be able to figure everything out. Guilt drives Sam, especially when times are tough. He often doesn't know how to exist much less cope day to day without his brother. Sam, in a way, has always felt responsible or guilty for every bad thing that has ever happened to him or the people he cares about. Every time Dean dies, Sam loses a little piece of himself, and the guilt that he feels at being left behind causes him to behave erratically. Sam often makes poor decisions based on the guilt he feels over losing his brother. A key example is Sam drinking demons' blood while Dean was down in hell after making a crossroads deal to save Sam's life.
Self Worth: Dean is not the only Winchester brother to struggle with self-worth. Sam also struggles with self-worth and not feeling like he is good enough. Sam has a hard time accepting that there are people in his world that would willingly give up their lives to save him. His self-worth also took a hit because of his contentious relationship with his father. Sam struggles a lot because of the actions or lack of action by John Winchester. Sam for years believed that somehow he could have done something different and somehow their lives would be better. He puts a lot of pressure on himself to be the perfect son, perfect brother, even though he struggles to believe that he is half as good as his brother. Sam also suffers from PTSD from the year he spent without a soul and the many traumas that happened before and after.
What events or circumstances in your character’s past have impacted them the most?
Jess's death when he was at Stanford was the catalyst that brought Sam back into the hunting world. He had gotten out and was living life before getting dragged back in by his brother. He carried a lot of guilt for a long time thinking that if he had been there, he would have been able to stop the demon. Coming to terms with being Lucifer's true vessel was truly a hard pill for Sam to swallow. He had always been a man of great faith but being told that you were the true vessel of Satan and expected to kill your brother, in order to stop an apocalypse was not something that Sam was just going to accept and live with. He tried for years to stop the pending apocalypse and died trying more than once. Sam's year of being soulless shaped who he was in many ways. He feels things deeply and became obsessed with trying to remember what happened when he was in hell, which almost destroyed his relationship with Dean and Cas. Getting his mother back also shaped who Sam is as a person. He had never had a mother before and suddenly he did and it was difficult for Sam to accept, even if his mother's love was something that Sam craved. For the first time in his life, he worried about someone on the same level as Dean and it tilted his world. Michael, the Archangel that stole his brother, definitely changed Sam. It was the first time that Sam was scared he might not get his brother back. Dean returned but something felt off and Sam didn't know what to do. Sam didn't know that Michael was still trapped inside Dean until after Dean had left him. Dean was giving in to the pull of Michael, not willing to fight for them. Sam finally snapped, slapping some sense into his brother, getting him to promise to fight for them.
What impressions do others tend to have of your character and how do those impressions differ from who your character truly is?
A lot of people think that Sam is weaker than Dean, that he needs to be protected. Maybe that's because he wears his heart on his sleeve a lot of time, especially with those he feels comfortable being around. It seems to an observer that taking on a curse or trials are somehow more difficult for Sam but in all honesty, they aren't more difficult, just that Sam has a terrible poker face. Chuck definitely believes that Sam in the weaker Winchester which is why he chooses Sam to tether himself to at the beginning of Season 15. Many demons and angels view Sam as a dumb moose, which is exactly the opposite of who he really is. Sam is one of the most logical, intelligent people in the world. He uses his intelligence like a weapon and they were able to outsmart Chuck and win because Sam outsmarted him.
What motivates your character? Sam's biggest motivation is trying to make the world a safe place for the people Sam loves the most. He is almost frantic with the need to keep people safe. Dean is a huge motivation for Sam. Dean is more than just Sam's brother, Sam views him as the man that raised him, protected him, and loved him unconditionally. There is nothing in the world that Sam wouldn't do for Dean, including dying in order to save him. Sam has family other than Dean, after all, family don't end in blood, but Sam has a difficult time functioning without Dean.
How does your character handle crisis or adversity? "We've got a job to do" is a phrase that Sam uses many many times. Sam feels things deeply but he is able to mostly separate his emotions from the job. Mostly, because if his brother is involved then all bets are off. There is no one in the world that Sam cares more for than Dean and he will do whatever it takes to make sure that he is safe. Sam is a cerebral man, so during a crisis, he is calm and inquisitive, determined to find an answer to the problems they are facing. Sam tries his best to respect his brother's wishes but there are many times that they go against each other for the greater good.
Skills, abilities, and physical weaknesses:
Master Hunter
Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant
Master Swordsman
Sam is Fluent in Latin and knows of many other languages. He can also cast mid-level spells (if he has access to the books) thanks to training under Rowena. Sam is a walking encyclopedia of monsters, demons, and everything that goes bump in the night.
As far as weaknesses go, Sam is just a regular human. With no demon blood or Angel juice, he can get tired, break bones, catch a cold, get his ass kicked and he heals just like everyone else.
Inventory:
Sam will appear with the clothes on his back, his cell phone, and his wallet
HORROR INFO
What aspects of your character are you most interested in exploring in a horror setting? Sam teeters on the edge of mental stability a lot. I am interested in exploring the limits of what he can handle. He is more prone to psychological torture but I wouldn't mind seeing him battle a corporeal monster, especially if it is to save his brother or those he cares about.
What is your character’s mental state upon entering the game? Thoroughness is appreciated here. While Sam teeters on the edge of emotional stability most days, he is actually in a somewhat good mental place when he comes to Mathias. They beat Chuck and can finally live their lives on their own terms and no one else's. There are no more world-ending events that they have to fight. They can mourn their losses and be free.
What unsettles and frightens your character? What sort of encounters would chip away at your character’s psychological stability? Sam is deathly afraid of clowns and has been tortured by some in his past. Seeing Chuck in Mathias would definitely chip away at his mental stability. More than anything, watching his brother or Castiel would be a great mental and emotional strain on Sam. Also being trapped in a tight space would remind Sam of being in the Cage with Lucifer and would not be good for his psyche. Sam has also struggled greatly with his father and feeling like he wasn't good enough, so John mocking Sam would definitely not sit well.
What horrifying events or genre elements would you like to see utilized in the game?
I have talked about a lot of what I would like to explore already but I would really love for Sam to have to confront the fact that sometimes there is nothing you can change to make the outcome any better.
